Relationship between blood type and mortality from Covid-19

News

A few weeks earlier, the Blood Advances magazine published two articles, the authors of which argued that patients with the first blood type are minimally susceptible to coronavirus infection and are not at risk of being hospitalized with a possible fatal outcome. This was stated by scientists from Denmark, where approximately 42% of the population have the first blood type, so their study showed that only 38% of the inhabitants were found to be infected.

Another group of researchers, but already from Canada, came to the conclusion that patients with the second and fourth blood groups most often encountered some kind of complications during the course of the disease. As a rule, they needed intensive care, hemodialysis and artificial ventilation of the lungs, as they had the most difficult signs of infection with the virus.

However, Denis Protsenko, chief physician of the Moscow Clinical Hospital No. 40, has his own opinion on this matter based on an analysis of his own patient database. He also tried to correlate the blood type with the risk of being infected and at the same time having various forms of complications during treatment, including death. According to him, they could not get reliable differences. On his Facebook page, the head physician showed two diagrams that show the situation in their hospital.

Based on these data, we can conclude:

  • patients with the first, second and fourth blood groups were treated for approximately the same time - a little more than 14 days;
  • patients with the third blood group were treated for less than 14 days;
  • patients with the first blood group were in the hospital less than others;
  • patients with the third blood group had the highest chances of death;
  • patients with the first, second and fourth blood groups had equal chances for complications and death.

It is worth adding here that patients with the third blood type, although they had a higher chance of death, however, against the background of other blood groups, no significant correlation was found. Thus, depending on the country, the relationship between blood type and various complications due to Covid-19 is different, so doctors should focus only on their statistics and treatment experience.
